As program director for AdviseMI, Julie manages the statewide implementation of AdviseMI, develops and strengthens relationships with partner high schools and colleges, and oversees the regional program supervisors.
Julie has worked in higher education for 20 years, with a primary focus on residence life and housing. Her time as an undergraduate student sparked a passion for higher education and student affairs. Julie began her career working as a residence director at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She then became a residential life coordinator at Ohio Wesleyan University and was promoted to assistant director of residential life. Julie pursued an opportunity to return to her home state of Michigan and became director of residence life at Aquinas College. There, she led the growth of the department for over 10 years. Julie is grateful for having had the opportunity to mentor students and to see them grow and develop through their postsecondary experiences. Beyond residence life, she has a passion for service-learning and leadership development. She has served as an adviser for six service-learning trips to locations across the United States.
Julie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University. She credits a strong support system of family members, high school staff, a close-knit peer group, and co-workers with establishing the expectation she would pursue postsecondary education.
Outside of work, Julie enjoys serving on the board of the Junior League of Grand Rapids and the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Grand Rapids. She can also be found hiking, traveling, training for her next running competition, attending concerts, or singing in the choir.
