Justin Weller

Strategic Engagement Intern
He/Him/His

As an intern for MCAN's Strategic Engagement department, Justin assists with social media engagement, works on higher education advocacy efforts, and supports a variety of other external communication projects.

Prior to accepting this position, Justin served in various roles in the higher education field. In his time at Saginaw Valley State University, Justin served as a senior orientation leader, where he helped incoming freshmen make the transition from high school to college, and as a global resident assistant, where he assisted in reducing the cultural gap between international and domestic students. During the 2020-21 school year, Justin served as an AdviseMI college adviser at Perry High School, and he is planning to serve a second year. After his service with AmeriCorps, Justin hopes to teach English in Asia or to continue his studies in higher education administration, with a focus on serving vulnerable students.

Justin earned his bachelor's degree in political science from SVSU in 2021. As a first-generation, low-income, queer student, Justin faced numerous challenges getting to college, and he often felt like he was the only person in his corner. He eventually found a supportive community at SVSU and thrived in national competitions, including winning two national awards for public speaking and writing. These experiences informed his time as an AdviseMI adviser, where he worked to reduce socioeconomic disparities that hold students back from reaching their true potential.

Outside of work, Justin enjoys reading, traveling the world, trying all the food there is to eat, drinking bubble tea, relaxing in a hammock, and spending time with loved ones.
