Job Title: Event Management Summer Intern
Reports to: Maura McGlynn, Event Manager
Employment Type: Part Time (20-25 hrs/week) from May through August 2024
Location: Lansing, Mich., in-person

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the event manager in the strategic engagement department, the summer intern will support MCAN’s event efforts across all departments. The incoming intern must be passionate about promoting the organization's mission of educational equity for low-income students, students of color, and first-generation college-going students. The ideal
candidate is highly collaborative, detail-oriented, and has a practice of self-reflection and advocacy for oneself and others. Applicants must have strong communication skills. This internship is an in-person position at MCAN’s office in Lansing and events in the greater Lansing area.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The strategic engagement intern performs a wide range of duties including but not
limited to the following:
▪ Attending site visits to new and evolving venues in the greater Lansing area
▪ Cataloguing and maintaining the MCAN event venue database
▪ Creating printed event materials through Avery software and with local printing partners
▪ Gathering and disseminating additional event materials as needed amongst MCAN departments
▪ Maintaining vendor relations through consistent and timely communication
▪ Supporting an equity audit of external MCAN event vendors and partners
▪ Co-creating and supporting the MCAN Annual Conference
▪ Researching innovative in-person and hybrid event technologies and ideas and reporting on suggested use or opportunities for growth

 

EDUCATION, JOB KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate must:
▪ Have an academic background or experience in event management, hospitality business, or program management.
▪ Have a valid in-state driver’s license for local travel.
▪ Have a strong and demonstrated commitment to equity.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The hourly wage for this position is $15/hour. We offer flexibility around scheduling, and can
accommodate (to the best of our ability) the needs of students completing an internship for
course credit.
