LANSING, Mich. — Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), alongside the Michigan Adult, Community and Alternative Education Association (MACAE), recently launched an incentive program for adult education sites to offer College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. Participating sites will receive financial support to purchase necessary technology and equipment, complete certification requirements and train staff members to administer the tests.
The program is a statewide investment to increase the number of adult learners successfully transitioning to postsecondary institutions. Created by College Board, CLEP exams allow an individual to earn college credit from participating institutions at a fraction of the time and cost of a traditional college course. This provides financial relief to adult learners, as they’re able to receive college credit before enrolling in a program, and helps them build confidence to enter postsecondary education.
So far, 12 adult education providers have committed to becoming certified CLEP testing centers. MCAN and MACAE are also offering additional financial support for sites that choose to align their high school equivalency curriculum with CLEP exam requirements, as well as other incentives for testing administration, FAFSA assistance, and postsecondary enrollment.
The following providers have committed to becoming CLEP testing centers: Detroit Public Schools Community District, Education and Training Connection, Fremont Public Schools, Fruitport Community Schools, Houghton Lake Community Schools, Iosco RESA, Kent ISD, Livingston ESA, MiSide, Networks Northwest, Plainwell Community Schools, and the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center.
“Increasing access to postsecondary education and college preparation resources will positively impact adult learners and help build a stronger workforce,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, MCAN executive director. “This program will create new possibilities for marginalized populations of adult learners while also contributing to our state attainment goal of Sixty by 30.”
